134 Manitoba first responders have been inducted into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt – one of the province’s highest honours. They were recognized for their live-saving efforts and bravery during the Carberry bus crash in 2023. Members from Carberry, Neepawa and Brandon were some of the first on the scene of the collision which killed 17 people.

Manitoba’s chief electoral officer is calling for a legal crackdown on spreading disinformation about provincial elections. Shipra Verma says deliberate attempts to mislead voters is a threat to democracy. She also wants the ban expanded to include false information about election officials, the equipment used in elections, and the electoral process.

Next door, Premier Scott Moe’s Saskatchewan Party won a fifth straight majority government on Monday. They lost in the cities, but retained an iron grip on rural areas. The party was elected in 35 seats compared with 26 for the NDP. Meanwhile in BC, a vote recount of the October 19th election found David Eby’s NDP has secured enough seats to form a majority, but there will be two automatic recounts.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has promised that if his party forms government. He’ll scrap the federal sales tax on new homes sold for less than a million dollars. He’d pay for the tax cut by scrapping the Liberals housing policy which includes the housing accelerator fund. It offers money to cities if they adjust bylaws and regulations considered barriers to new construction.

Federal money for infrastructure and housing were key reasons Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett took part in a local delegation to Ottawa last week. He told The Brandon Sun that while there are no specific announcements from the trip, it was important to look into what funding is available for future projects like upgrading the city’s Transit fleet. The group also included MLA Glen Simard and Shawn Wood from the rural construction association.

A recall has been issued for ‘Tangfastics’ gummy candies due to pieces of wood. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the candies are in 175 gram packages with a best before date of June 2025.

There are some towns in Canada that seem perfectly named for Halloween. Stats-Canada highlighted 8 communities on Instagram including Coffin Cove in Newfoundland and Labrador, Dead Creek, New Brunswick – Destruction Bay, Yukon – and Grave Flats, Alberta. Manitoba’s Bloodvein is also on the list.

Here’s one lucky dude. Jerry Hicks from North Carolina found a $20 bill outside a convenience store last week, went inside and bought an Extreme Cash ‘scratchie’ – and won a million dollars. He took the lump sum of $600,000 and after taxes, took home just over $429,000. He plans to help his kids and retire as a carpenter after 56 years.
