It’s almost the middle of November, and there’s still no snow in Brandon. The record for the latest snowfall is November 25th, 1954. The city usually gets an average of 6 cm in October – and around 20 in November. Environment Canada also says we’ve now gone 15 straight months of above seasonal temperatures, and the warm trend is continuing this month.

This year’s ‘Take Back the Night’ march in Brandon is on Thursday (Nov 14). The goal is to raise awareness about violence against women, men and minority individuals. The rate of intimate partner violence in Manitoba rose last year – and in Brandon, the Westman Women’s Shelter saw ‘stays’ rise by 10%.

If a new contract cannot be reached before this Friday, Canada Post workers will be on strike. The corporation’s latest contract offer, which the union rejected, included annual wage increases totalling 11.5-percent over four years – also better pension and health benefits.

Ottawa is moving to end the work stoppages at ports in BC and Montreal. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon is directing the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order the resumption of all operations, and move the talks to binding arbitration. He said the work stoppages at the ports are significantly impacting supply chains, thousands of jobs, and Canada’s reputation as a reliable trading partner.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business has re-energized its calls for Ottawa to eliminate the carbon tax – they say 87% of its member businesses want it gone. They also say it’s deeply offensive to small businesses that the government taxes their carbon rebates.

Select Porsche owners in Canada have been told to stop driving their cars immediately and to get repairs. 322 cars, all 2024 models, have a potential wheel lock fault that could cause wheels to separate from vehicles.
