A new 24/7 safe space for Indigenous women, two-spirit, and gender-diverse people is coming to Brandon. The province is providing $500,000 for the drop-in and outreach centre to be located on 10th Street. It’ll have 10 bedrooms, a living room and dining area, a kitchen, laundry facilities – and space for various activities.

The Manitoba government is looking to toughen up impaired driving penalties. Right now, drivers convicted of a second offence of impaired driving causing injury or death get a 10-year license suspension – under a new bill, it would be a lifetime ban. They’d also get a lifetime ban for a second conviction of driving with alcohol in their blood within 10 years.

Brandon police arrested a 28-year-old Saskatchewan man and seized two deer and ammunition after a traffic stop Wednesday on 18th Street North. Police say the driver showed signs of impairment, but refused to provide a breath sample. Officers say they spotted a large amount of ammo in the vehicle – and two skinned deer in the back.

Russell RCMP have charged a man and a woman with several offences including drug trafficking. Police say 46-year-old Steven Jarvis and a 36-year-old woman were arrested after a traffic stop on Tuesday. Unstamped cigarettes and illegal prescription drugs were seized.

The cause of a fire that destroyed a house in Souris Thursday morning is still under investigation, but fire officials believe it started in the garage. There are no reports of injuries.

A third-party provider responsible for collecting overdue court-ordered fines in Manitoba has been the victim of a cyberattack. The province says it’s still working on how many people may have been affected, but there’s currently no evidence that anyone’s personal information was compromised.

Harvest Manitoba reports the majority of people that access their services are female. A survey also found many of their clients are living with a disability – most live in rented housing – have children under 18 – and earn $20,000 or less a year. Harvest says 50,000 people access food banks every month in Manitoba.
