Under threats of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, the Manitoba government is launching an advertising campaign to encourage us to buy local. It’ll spend about $140,000 over the next month on digital platforms, and later
expand to billboards and radio. A website also has links to products made in Manitoba and in other parts of Canada.

All this talk of ‘Trump Tariffs’ has created a rise in patriotic feelings among Canadians. A new poll has found that national pride across Canada is up 9 points to 67% – and in Quebec, the number of people who said they were ‘very proud’ to be Canadian jumped 13 points.

Nominations are now open on their website for the 2025 Annual ‘Tribute to Tourism Awards’ to be held on June 11th in Brandon. A new category has been added – ‘Brandon Event of the Year’.

An independent audit of Manitoba health-care authorities found most have deficits driven mainly by wage increases and the rising cost of drugs and supplies. It found that for Prairie Mountain Health one of the biggest
costs was paying private agencies for nurses. The NDP launched the audit last year when the government began seeing a sharp rise in expenses.

The province is spending $811,000 to support five Manitoba organizations empower men to help end gender-based violence. The goal is to offer targeted programming, counselling and other supports to help men and boys develop the skills needed to create healthier relationships.

Manitoba RCMP, using a plane with thermal imaging, tracked and arrested six people trying to illegally cross the Canada-U.S. border last month. With the RCMP plane directing officers on the ground, all six were arrested
without incident in a wooded area east of Emerson. The group was later transferred to Canada Border Services.

Three pavilions – Ukraine, India and El Salvador – open today kicking off the 16th annual Westman Multicultural Festival in Brandon. Eleven pavilions are featured this year including 4 new ones: Nigeria, Columbia, Palestine and HAMI – the Hispanic Association of Manitoba. The first-ever Winter Trails Day is being held in Manitoba this Saturday, but an event at Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre has been postponed. Organizers blame the weather saying ‘If it’s too cold for horses, it’s to cold for the average Manitoban.’ The event had planned sleigh rides and other activities.
