-The City of Brandon is getting ready for a PC leadership debate
The Brandon Sun says The contenders for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba will arrive in Brandon later this month for the first of at least two political debates.
Both PC candidates, Fort Whyte PC MLA Obby Khan and Churchill businessman Wally Daudrich, are attending the Brandon debate on Feb. 19.
-Frigid cold temperatures are expected to envelop much of south and central Manitoba, including Westman; as a multi-day extreme cold event continues to tear through the frozen prairies; cover up, frostbite can occur in minutes.
-The Manitoba Government is increasing school operating funding for the upcoming school year; by 3.4 per cent — the same increase as the current year; and it’s also adding $6.8 million to its $30-million school nutrition program.
-There’s a growing food bank crisis in Brandon. “Over 50,000 people rely on food banks monthly in Manitoba, and over 2,000 of them are here in Brandon. The Brandon Sun says that Manitoba Food bank demand has gone up by 150 per cent since 2020.
-President Donald Trump announced a 25% steel and aluminum tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S, Monday night. This latest executive order takes effect in March. In response from Paris, Prime Minister justin Trudeau called Trump’s tariffs “unacceptable, saying Tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum would be entirely unjustified; “We are the [United States’] closest ally. Our economies are integrated.”
-The Bdn Sun says: The rising cost of living has pushed the average cost of dating in the Prairie provinces to about $4,166 annually, according to a new poll by the Bank of Montreal
In Manitoba and the Prairie region, it found, 44 per cent of residents have altered their date plans to cut costs. Additionally, nearly one-third of singles in the Prairies have cancelled a date entirely to save money.
