The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is underway at Brandon’s Keystone Centre. Today is Heroes Day – members of the military, police, firefighters and EMS personnel receive free admission. The annual fair features world-class show jumping, heavy horse competitions; livestock sales and displays, hands-on agricultural education programs, over 300 commercial exhibits – and live entertainment.

The intersection of First Street and Maryland Avenue in Brandon will be closed this week as work begins to build a new roundabout. The first phase is to install underground utilities, with construction expected to continue through the summer. The roundabout is to be completed in the fall.

A debate has been scheduled for candidates running in the Brandon-Souris riding in the federal election. It’ll be hosted at Brandon University on April 23rd. The debate will be open to the public and streamed live by WCGtv
on its website – and rebroadcast at a later date.

Elections Canada is hiring more than 200,000 temporary employees to work the federal election. Each position pays at least $20.00 an hour. The federal election is set for Monday, April 28th with early voting from the 18th to the 20th.

Canada is retaliating with a more targeted tariff approach to specific U-S products – items that aren’t going to make too many Canadians mad. For example: passenger drones, flame throwers, false beards and meat from animals including primates, camels and manatees. Canada has also slapped tariffs on more common stuff like metals and orange juice.

Next Sunday, April 6th, Premier Wab Kinew plans to hold a ‘Rally for Canada’ at the Manitoba Legislature. He says it’s time to celebrate this country and stand up in the face of uncertainty. The family-friendly event will have
food trucks, kid-friendly activities, face painting, and everyone is encouraged to wear red or their Canadian tuxedo.

Manitoba Hydro is asking for a nearly 11% increase in rates over the next three years. It says the money is needed to fix aging infrastructure, increase generating capacity and mitigate the effects of drought and debt. If approved, the annual 3.5% rate hikes would begin next year.

A new film studio has opened in Niverville south of Winnipeg that promises to bring an economic boost to the town and the province. Jette Studios is over 25,000-square feet in size and features 40-foot ceilings, a high-tech
surround LED screen – and state-of-the art production suites. Last year, Manitoba saw record-breaking production volume at almost $435-million.
