Cooler, wet weather will be a welcome relief for firefighters battling blazes in the province. A fire in the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet has forced almost a 1,000 people to flee. There are also evacuation orders in place for Nopiming Provincial Park, and the north and south Whiteshell areas – and in Westman, a fire near The Pas also remains out-of-control.

A 54-year-old woman from North Cypress Langford is recovering in hospital after being shot by an RCMP officer on Monday night. Police say the woman, armed with an edged weapon, was walking in and out of traffic and climbing onto vehicles on Highway 1 near Road 88 West. When she advanced towards an officer while carrying the weapon, she was shot and wounded.

Several students were injured in a crash involving a school bus and a tractor Tuesday morning. It happened in the Rural Municipality of Grey, south of Portage. Police say a grader was pushing debris, and a tractor was following behind to collect it – and the bus rear-ended the tractor. 31 kids were on the bus – 8 suffered minor injuries.

Once land is rezoned by City Council, Brandon’s newest K to 8 school will be located in the city’s southwest off 34th Street. There’s no timeline on when the school will open, but it’s expected to have room for a thousand students and a daycare. The facility is much-needed – Brandon School Division has been near capacity at all but one school since 2020.

The Manitoba government is warning about new measles exposure sites, and they’re close to home. The four new sites are in Boissevain, south of Brandon, where people may have been exposed to the virus between May 7th and 9th. They include the town’s Canada Post office, RBC, Sunrise Credit Union, and Goodon Industries.

The only Manitoban named to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet is a rookie MP from the province’s far north. Rebecca Chartrand was named minister of northern and Arctic affairs, as well as minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. Carney named 28 full ministers to his cabinet, which will meet for the first time today.
