As evacuees flee wildfires in Manitoba, and as donations begin to come in to support them, two levels of government have pledged to make every donation even more impactful.
In a release on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 4, the Federal government and the Government of Manitoba announced they would match every dollar donated to the Canadian Red Cross 2025 Manitoba Wildfires Appeal. This means every dollar donated will effectively turn into $3.00 for the next 30 days.
“Since the start of the evacuation process, the people of Manitoba have stepped up and shown incredible kindness and empathy toward their fellow citizens facing hardship during a crisis,” said Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor, minister responsible for emergency management for Manitoba. “The provincial government is proud to reflect those values and, on their behalf, we have humbly stood with the federal government and the Canadian Red Cross to support evacuees and their families from the moment they begin to navigate the challenges of staying secure and healthy while away from their communities until they can safely return home.”
The federal government will match donations up to $30 million and the provincial government will match donations up to $15 million. The donation matching will be retroactive to the opening of the appeal on May 28. The money will go to immediate financial relief and support for both evacuees and the communities hosting them.
Tomorrow, Q Country 91.5 and Star FM will participate in a Day of Caring Radiothon alongside other radio stations across Manitoba to raise funds for wildfire victims.
Anyone wishing to donate to help victims in either Manitoba or Saskatchewan can do so online at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111.
