What started with just two volunteers five years ago has grown into a thriving youth movement for change across West Central Manitoba.
United Way West Central Manitoba (UWWCM) is proud to launch the fifth year of its Summer of Service program, with 44 youth registered to volunteer in Brandon and 16 in Portage la Prairie.
Jordan-Blayne (JB) Bjornsson, a two-time Summer of Service volunteer, has coming full circle. JB joined the UWWCM staff team this summer as a Youth Engagement Assistant, supporting and mentoring the next wave of changemakers.
“Volunteering with the Summer of Service program has been a rewarding experience that deepened my passion for community service,” says JB. “Now, stepping into a leadership role, I feel proud and honored to guide others in making a positive impact just as I was once inspired to do.”
The program runs through July and August is and designed to connect youth with meaningful volunteer opportunities during the summer months. Participants gain hands-on experience in community building, leadership, and civic engagement.
“We’re excited to have so many registered for Summer of Service this year. It’s great to know we live in a community where youth are aware of the value of helping others,” says Jamie Stouffer, Director of Staff Development and Community Wellness. “They’re learning, growing, and showing us what the future of caring for community looks like.”
From helping at food banks and tending to community gardens, to leading crafts with seniors and caring for animals in shelters, volunteers spend the summer supporting local nonprofit partners who rely on their energy, creativity, and compassion.
