Tomorrow, November 11th, is Remembrance Day when we honor and remember those who’ve served in the armed forces and sacrificed their lives. In Brandon, the ceremony will be held at Assiniboine Credit Union Place. Doors open at 10:00 am.

The Manitoba New Democrats wrapped up their convention in Brandon over the weekend. A range of topics were discussed including a higher minimum wage, food security and the costs of child-care. Last Friday, the government announced another one-million dollars to help revitalize the city’s Park Community Centre which will house a 68-space child-care facility.

Also at the convention, Premier Wab Kinew urged delegates to start getting ready for the next provincial election in 2027. He announced Brandon East MLA Glen Simard as the first nominated candidate for the 2027 campaign. The NDP have been riding high in recent opinion polls.

Brandon West MLA Wayne Balcaen is calling on the province to provide long-term, predictable funding for the city’s Helping Hands soup kitchen. They’ve seen a steady increase in demand, and are on track to serve 51,000 meals this year – up 5,000 from 2024. The premier says any funding requests will be considered.

The high cost of living is a major reason there’s been an increase in demand for soup kitchens and food banks. A new poll has found 1-in-5 Canadians skipped paying a bill to afford groceries in the past year. Adults under 55 were four times more likely to put off payments for their cars, credit cards and electricity bills to buy food.

The staff at Brandon’s Neelin High School has received Manitoba’s Order of the Buffalo Hunt. The premier presented the award last Friday in recognition of their bravery, quick response and compassion during a violent sword attack at the school in June. A 16-year-old boy faces three counts of attempted murder.

The measles outbreak in the province has climbed to 247 confirmed cases, and health officials says nearly 87% of all of the cases involve people who had not been vaccinated. In the last 25 years, only 18 measles cases were reported.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. All 29 crew members on board the freighter died when it went down in Lake Superior during a storm on this day in 1975. Gordon Lightfoot’s ballad memorializing the wreck went to Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976.

and ‘Predator: Badlands’ led all movies at theatres with $40-million dollars in ticket sales in its debut weekend. That’s a new high for the franchise that began in 1987. Rounding out the Top 5 were: ‘Regretting You’, ‘Black Phone 2’, ‘Sarah’s Oil’ and ‘Nuremberg’.
