Ottawa is planning to build about 180 homes at CFB Shilo; primarily one- and two-bedroom apartment buildings. It’s all part of a national housing expansion for The Canadian Armed Forces bases. The Brandon Sun says the Shilo homes will cost $84 million to build, and are needed as the army grows. Recently, soldiers from CFB Shilo were deployed to Latvia to support NATO’s defense measures against Russia.

A 72-hour Winnipeg detox center can now take in people under influence of drugs like meth as of Wednesday, after medical professionals gave final approval to move forward. Premier Wab Kinew says 4 of 20 beds at the detox centre are devoted to such patients right now, with more on the way, Kinew said it took longer than expected to ensure the right training and resources were in place for medical staff at the Disraeli Freeway protective care facility. The announcement came after the first question period of the spring session wrapped.

The goal is to raise funds for Special Olympics to cover costs associated with playing, so that there are no barriers to the athletes who want to compete.

Immigration could soon account for all of Canada’s population growth. The parliamentary budget officer projects 2026 will be Canada’s second consecutive year of zero population growth. That growth, which was driven almost entirely by immigration, peaked at 3.1 per cent in 2023; high above the historic average of 1.1 per cent going back to 1972. The parliamentary budget officers says the government should adopt longer-term planning beyond the three-year window in the Immigration Levels Plan.

Health care, and the deficit are the focus of the spring sitting of the Manitoba legislature. 19 bills will be introduced ; including motions on staff-to-patient ratios, and ending mandatory overtime for nurses, banning machetes from parks and public places, and banning employers from requiring sick notes for short-term worker absences. The Government is also promising to stop running deficits before the next election in 2027. It’s expected to reach $1.6 billion; more than double the $794 million originally planned.
