About 500 students from across Manitoba are in Winnipeg today for the 28th annual Skills Manitoba Competition — a province‑wide showcase of hands‑on talent in more than 40 skilled‑trade and technology events. Students at the secondary, post‑secondary, and apprentice levels are going head‑to‑head in Olympic‑style contests ranging from robotics and manufacturing to 3D animation, automotive repair, construction, hairstyling, and more.

Westman has a strong track record at the event. Last year, several local students brought home medals, including 18 from Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. Assiniboine Community College also had a standout showing, with six medal‑winning students across multiple categories — including gold in 3D Digital Game Art, Electrical Installations, and Web Design & Development.

Gold‑medal winners from many categories will go on to represent Team Manitoba at the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto from May 26–30, 2026.
Hosted by Skills Canada Manitoba, the event aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in trades and technologies at a time when the province — and the country — faces a significant skilled‑labour shortage. The competition is being held at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame Campus, where students can also tour labs and meet instructors to explore future training opportunities.
