The Manitoba government is increasing its annual support for the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (ASM) to $525,000, adding $200,000 in new funding to help expand dementia services across the province. Health, Seniors and Long‑Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced the investment at the ASM’s annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, noting that the demand for support continues to grow as more Manitobans are diagnosed with dementia.
Asagwara said the additional funding will help the Alzheimer Society strengthen community‑based services, including dementia navigation, caregiver supports, early‑stage programs, and education sessions. “A diagnosis of dementia has a significant impact on individuals and families, and having the right support can make a real difference,” the minister said. “This investment will help strengthen those services and meaningfully support more Manitobans across the province.”
Along with the funding increase, the province is entering into a continuing service agreement with the Alzheimer Society beginning this fiscal year. The agreement is designed to provide stable, predictable funding so the organization can plan long‑term and continue delivering services consistently across Manitoba. It will also support stronger coordination with regional dementia teams, helping families access services earlier in their journey.
The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba welcomed the announcement. CEO Erin Crawford said the funding boost will help the organization meet rising demand for counselling, support groups, dementia‑friendly programming, and other essential services. “Anytime the government or our community shows support through funding, it helps ensure Manitobans living with dementia are not alone,” Crawford said. “That is what drives everything we do.”
For more than 40 years, the Alzheimer Society has supported Manitobans affected by all types of dementia, offering resources, education, and community programs aimed at improving quality of life for individuals and caregivers.
