đŠī¸ MPI Sets New Storm Claims Record
Manitoba Public Insurance says the severe storm that swept across the province earlier this month has now generated more than 25,000 claims, setting a new record for a single weather event. MPI is still encouraging Manitobans to submit claims so officials can determine the full extent of the damage.
To help deal with the backlog, MPI has opened an additional hail claims centre in Winnipeg, capable of processing up to 400 claims per day.
đ Extreme Weather Driving Up Costs
A new Statistics Canada report says extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, severe, and expensive. The report found Canadian insurers have paid out roughly $9 billion in flood-related claims over the past decade.
The findings come as Manitoba continues assessing damage from recent storms in the Swan Valley and Stonewall regions, where more than 250 millimetres of rain fell during a single weather event.
đ MASC Reminds Producers of Reporting Deadlines
The Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) is reminding producers that key crop insurance and excess moisture reporting deadlines are approaching.
Farmers impacted by flooding or excess moisture are encouraged to contact their local MASC office, with some reporting requirements due by June 30.
đ Flood Warning Continues for Brandon
A flood warning remains in effect for the Assiniboine River in Brandon, with water levels expected to peak today.
Low-lying areas and recreational spaces continue to be impacted, and residents are urged to stay away from floodwaters and use caution near the river.
đĻ Mosquito Numbers Surge Across Manitoba
Mosquito populations are booming following the wet spring and recent flooding.
Provincial monitoring shows floodwater mosquito counts averaged 1,240 mosquitoes per trap during the week of June 17â23, up 180 per cent from the previous week. Brandon’s mosquito abatement program can consider fogging when citywide trap counts exceed 1,000 nuisance mosquitoes per trap.
đĻ Province Warns of West Nile and Lyme Disease Risks
The Manitoba government is urging residents to protect themselves against both Lyme disease and West Nile virus as tick populations remain high and mosquito numbers continue to climb.
Officials recommend insect repellent, long sleeves and pants, regular tick checks, and eliminating standing water around homes.
đ¨ Teen Killed in ATV Collision
A 19-year-old man from the RM of Brokenhead has died following a collision between an ATV and a gravel truck near the intersection of Provincial Road 302 and Road 71 North.
The truck driver, a 60-year-old man from Steinbach, was not injured. Beausejour RCMP continue to investigate.
â¤ī¸ Fundraiser Supports Son of Crash Victim
The family of Xiaoyun Zhang (SHYOW-yoon JOHNG), who was killed in a May 27 collision at Highway 110 and Richmond Avenue East, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her son’s post-secondary education.

đ Vincent Massey Celebrates Class of 2026
A total of 295 graduates crossed the stage at Vincent Massey High School’s graduation ceremony Thursday at Assiniboine Credit Union Place, with the school reporting a graduating class of 312 students.
The nearly four-hour ceremony concluded with remarks from valedictorian Loveth Aso.
Meanwhile, Prairie Hope High School’s graduation ceremony takes place today at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Brandon University’s Board of Governors has appointed Dr. Leanne Zacharias as Dean of the School of Music.
An internationally recognized cellist, educator and long-time BU faculty member, Zacharias begins a five-year term July 13 after serving as Acting Dean since September 2025.
đ¤ Pelican Lake Patrol Added for Summer
The RM of Prairie Lakes is introducing a roving patrol around Pelican Lake this summer as part of its one-boat, one-lake program aimed at preventing aquatic invasive species.
The patrol will monitor boat launches, educate boaters, and ensure users have the required decals after more than 400 inspections were completed during the program’s first year.
đī¸ Historic Brandon Building Among Province’s Most Endangered
The Historical Society of Manitoba has included the Manitoba Government Display Building on Brandon’s Provincial Exhibition grounds among Manitoba’s most endangered buildings.
Built in 1927, the building is reportedly suffering from a leaking roof and broken windows. Three other Westman structures also made the organization’s annual list.

Director of Hockey Operations Chris Moulton says recent NCAA eligibility changes have made CHL players more attractive to NHL clubs. Five Wheat Kings appeared on NHL Central Scouting lists this season.
