Two major west‑central Manitoba highways reopened Tuesday after flooding forced early‑morning closures, though officials warn that road conditions remain compromised in several areas.
Highway 5 between Neepawa and Highway 261 reopened after overland flooding pushed water across the roadway. Highway 16, between Neepawa and Gladstone, also reopened following a separate overnight closure.
Despite the improved access, Highway 16 remains a concern. A washout has been reported north of the Highway 5 east junction, where heavy rainfall damaged the roadway surface. Drivers can expect rough patches, surface breaks, and areas where water had recently flowed over the highway.
The closures were triggered by intense rainfall and widespread overland flooding across the region, which continues to affect road stability even as water levels begin to recede.
Motorists are being urged to slow down, use caution, and watch for changing conditions as crews assess and repair affected sections.
