Drivers Urged to Use Caution as Extreme Heat Impacts Manitoba Highways
Manitoba motorists are being urged to use extra caution and monitor road conditions after multiple reports of heat-related pavement damage surfaced over the weekend.
A section of the Perimeter Highway between Highway 1 and Saskatchewan Avenue was closed Sunday evening after extreme heat caused the pavement to buckle. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
Additional reports from motorists suggest other sections of highway may also be experiencing damage. One driver reported seeing numerous vehicles pulled over after travelling through a damaged stretch, with several motorists reportedly checking tires following encounters with rough pavement.
Another motorist warned of significant cracking on the northbound West Perimeter, over the bridge past The Downs, claiming both lanes were affected and debris was being kicked up by passing vehicles. The report indicated several vehicles had pulled over shortly after the area and that the damage was not marked at the time.
Earlier this weekend, a buckled section of Highway 75 near St. Adolphe was also reported and later repaired.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert for changing road conditions, and check Manitoba 511 for the latest highway updates and closures.
