Producers from across the region will gather in Melita on Wednesday, July 15, as the Westman Agricultural Diversification Association hosts its annual Field Day at its test plots southwest of town. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., with coffee and registration beginning at 9:30.
This year’s Field Day features a full slate of agronomy demonstrations, research updates and hands‑on learning stations. Morning rotations will focus on seed‑placed phosphorus in canola, greenhouse gas work, and nitrification inhibitor studies, giving producers a closer look at how current research is shaping fertilizer and nutrient‑management decisions.
A new addition to the program is a soil‑pit demonstration, where specialists will examine soil structure, carbonate levels and other physical characteristics that influence crop performance. The session is designed to help producers better understand what lies beneath the surface and how soil properties affect long‑term productivity.
Following a free barbecue lunch, the afternoon program will highlight ongoing soil‑health initiatives in Manitoba, along with updates on Made‑in‑Manitoba dry bean inoculants. WADO researchers will also share results from dry‑bean seeding‑date trials, comparing early, normal and late planting windows and their impact on disease, pests and yield.
Hybrid hemp will also be in the spotlight, with several varieties on display and discussions on nitrogen and seeding‑rate interactions. The day wraps up with a session on verticillium stripe in canola and the potential yield impacts associated with the disease.
Pre‑registration is required. Producers can sign up by contacting WADO at 204‑522‑5415 or by email.
