When we were kids, it seemed like there were surefire ways to tell if someone was a real adult. Things like being married, owning a home, having a reliable car and maybe even kids were all signs that people were responsible and on the right track for success. But these days, some of us are still waiting to feel like actual grown-ups and many of us can’t afford to be homeowners, so how do we know if someone is winning at adulting?
It turns out, it may be easier than we think. A new survey of 2-thousand adults finds that having your life together now is really just about staying on top of the little things in life. According to the poll, these are the biggest signs you have your life together in 2026:

- Being financially responsible – More than half (52%) of respondents agree that this is the ultimate adulting achievement. It’s not about being rich, just having a healthy bank balance in an account that’s not overdrawn, a credit card that you pay off regularly, and emergency savings to cover at least three months salary.
- Enjoying your own company – Being comfortable spending time alone is a sign you’re a mature adult and 43% believe developing a good relationship with yourself is a key part of having your life together.
- Admitting when you’re wrong – Owning your mistakes and being able to take responsibility when you’re at fault isn’t easy, but 42% say being able to is a grown-up green flag.
- Saying no without feeling guilty – Having boundaries and being able to communicate them is something a lot of us are still working on, and those that can have moved beyond people-pleasing and are living on their own terms.
- Not paying for subscriptions you don’t use – Still have mysterious or unnecessary subscription payments coming out of your account every month? You’re not alone, but 36% say confidently knowing you don’t is the ultimate adulting flex.
- Being aware of when trash day is – Making sure you get your garbage out to be picked up doesn’t even matter when you’re a twentysomething, but 35% say knowing when garbage day is means you’ve got your life together.
- Making your bed every day – We said it was the little things that count and this is proof. About a third (34%) of those polled say daily bed-making shows you’ve got things figured out. Sure, you’re just going to sleep in it again tonight, but if you take the time to make order out of chaos when the day just got started, you’re a real adult.
