A 33-year-old man faces drug trafficking related charges after an RCMP traffic stop near Portage la Prairie yesterday.
According to police, they conducted a traffic stop on an SUV just outside Portage la Prairie at about 12:40 PM on September 23. After a conversation with the driver, RCMP called in the Manitoba First Nations Police Service to assist by bringing their police service dog to the scene.
From there, police allege the dog smelled narcotics, resulting in a search of the vehicle and the subsequent seizure of 34 kilograms of what is believed to be cocaine (they are sending samples from the seized packages to Health Canada for confirmation). According to police, 34 kilograms of cocaine have an estimated street value of approximately $850,000.
The driver was arrested without incident at the scene.
33-year-old Gurinder Singh is charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking. None of the charges against him have been tested in court.
