Manitoba is creating a new full-time RCMP position dedicated to investigating livestock theft across the province, a move aimed at strengthening enforcement and providing greater protection for cattle producers.
The new role will work closely with livestock producers and law enforcement agencies to investigate thefts, enforce livestock-related laws and help deter rural crime. The province is expected to formally announce the position during the Manitoba Beef Producers’ annual luncheon at the Manitoba Legislature.
The creation of the position comes as livestock values continue to rise, making theft an increasingly costly issue for producers. Provincial officials say dozens of livestock theft cases have been reported in recent years, highlighting the need for a specialized investigator focused on the agricultural sector.
The officer will serve in a permanent, province-wide capacity, although details such as the officer’s home detachment and the timeline for filling the position have not yet been released. The provincial government has also not disclosed the funding amount attached to the role.
Industry leaders have welcomed the announcement, saying it will give producers greater confidence that theft and fraud cases are being investigated and that enforcement resources are available when needed.
The new RCMP position is also expected to support the future implementation of a livestock inspection program in Manitoba. Producer groups have long advocated for such a system, arguing that improved inspection and traceability measures would make it more difficult for stolen cattle to enter the marketplace.
Provincial officials say legislation related to a livestock inspection service is currently being developed, with more details expected in the future. The new investigative position is being viewed as an important step toward strengthening livestock security and accountability across Manitoba.
