If you ask a group of men what they think women want, they’d probably say something about money and guys being at least 6-feet tall. But when women were actually asked what they want from the men in their lives, the responses had nothing to do with the size of his paycheck or appearance at all.
The research comes from licensed counselor and college professor Dr. Suzanne Degges-White, who talked to 108 women about this subject. While her study was informal and small, the answers from women were consistent and kept coming back to one basic request: listen to us.
Here’s what real women say they want most from the men in their lives: Bing Videos
- Put the toolbox down – The women wish men would stop trying to fix everything and just listen. Sometimes they want to vent or complain and have their partner say nothing more than “I’m sorry that’s happening. That really sucks.”
- Help out without being asked – Women wish their partners would step up and share household and life responsibilities and decision-making without having to be asked or reminded.
- R-E-S-P-E-C-T – These women consistently mentioned wanting to have their opinions and goals taken seriously. They simply want to be treated as equals, and “to feel heard and respected.”
- To feel comfortable being herself – They want to feel safe with a man, but they’re mostly talking about emotional safety. The women mentioned things like being able to tell their partner what’s bothering them without being laughed at, criticized, discouraged or dismissed.
- A sense of security – While there are definitely women who deserve the “gold-digger” label, the women in this study didn’t talk about wanting a wealthy partner, they want one with ambition, a decent work ethic, and the ability to help support himself and her. That has nothing to do with the size of his bank account and it’s far more attractive than a guy with a trust fund who’s a bad partner or has no desire to get off the couch.
