- “Scream,” “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th”: Familiarity over surprise. The plots change from film to film in these series, but the formula doesn’t, and just knowing what’s coming makes it more enjoyable to some. Rewatching these classics can feel nostalgic and even comforting, like a connection to your past.
- “Obsession,” “The Conjuring,” “The Exorcist”: Possibility over proof. All of these involve things science can’t explain – demons, possessions and a supernatural wish. People who believe in the paranormal are drawn to the supernatural, according to one survey, so if ghost stories scare you more than masked killers, that may reveal what you believe is possible.
- “Backrooms,” “Smile,” “The Blair Witch Project”: Curiosity over certainty. In these movies, you don’t get the full picture, but that’s what draws fans in. A 2024 study found that the less certain a situation feels, the more the brain wants to understand it and that curiosity may be what gets some hooked on this kind of horror.
- “Terrifier,” “Evil Dead,” “Saw”: Intensity over restraint. The gore may make these movies impossible to sit through for some, but fans who enjoy them may just enjoy a higher level of intensity.
- “Ghostbusters,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Beetlejuice”: Fun over fear. Scary movies don’t have to cause nightmares, some people enjoy spooky “horror” movies that are really just comedies in a costume. If one of these is your favorite, you may be into the mood and ritual of Halloween more than the scares.
From the downright terrifying to a comforting thriller, there’s a horror movie for whatever way you enjoy being scared. And the best part is, if it’s too much, you can always hit pause or turn on the lights.
