With Remembrance Day approaching, the Royal Canadian Legion is encouraging Canadians to wear their poppies respectfully and reflect on the meaning behind the symbol.
The Legion recommends wearing the poppy over the heart on the left side of clothing and keeping it visible and unobstructed. Some Legion branches offer reusable black centre pins designed to secure the poppy without covering it.
Canadians are encouraged to wear their poppies throughout the Remembrance Day campaign and on November 11 itself, including during and after local ceremonies. The poppy may also be worn at other commemorative events recognizing military service and sacrifice.
Following Remembrance Day, the Legion suggests storing the poppy for future use or disposing of it respectfully. Many people choose to place their poppy on a wreath or cenotaph as part of local remembrance ceremonies.
The Legion notes that poppies are provided free of charge, with donations to the Poppy Fund helping veterans, military members and their families facing financial or personal challenges.
The annual campaign serves as a reminder to pause, reflect and honour the Canadians who have served and sacrificed in times of war, conflict and peacekeeping operations.
