Brandonite Ryan Lamont is showing no fear.
The 28-year-old is competing in the Great Canadian Death Race in Grand Cache, Alberta over the August long weekend.
"For me personally, it’s the toughest race in Canada for sure," said Lamont, "It’s a true bushwhacking wilderness with the mountains."
The 125 kilometre race happens over 24 hours through the Rockies and includes three mountain summits, a major river crossing, and 17,000 feet of elevation change.
"You train yourself to be in pain and to be able to handle sometimes the agony that you find yourself in," said Lamont. "I work hard on my feet so that does help. I ran to Alexander and back, went and spent 27 3/4 miles in the Brandon Hills and ran for five-and-half hours in the rain. Try to put the long miles in and find yourself in that place and teach your body to take in calories and find the fuel it needs to get through it."
Lamont competed in last year’s grueling trek on a relay team, but this will be his first go-around solo.
"Just being able to prove to yourself that you truly have no limits and that you can truly become one with nature and push yourself beyond what you ever thought possible," added Lamont.
The extreme event attracts nearly 1,500 participants from around the world each year.
