The annual Halloween Food Drive between Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association and Brandon University Students’ Union kicked off on Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 pm.
Students from both ACCSA and BUSU made their rounds in neighbourhoods across Brandon to collect non-perishable donations for the Samaritan House to provide greater food security for residents within Brandon, while celebrating the Halloween spirit with costumes, decorations and some children in tow.
Multiple groups from both BUSU and the ACCSA canvassed neighbourhoods in Brandon to bring in as many donations as possible. Brandon University Students’ Union brought in a whopping 3,313.2 pounds of non-perishable goods to the Samaritan House, which included the Brandon University Chemistry Club collecting an impressive 1,725.26 pounds in donations all on their own.
“It was exciting to go out with volunteers to collect food donations” said Brandon University Students’ Union President, Olufunke Sophia Adeleye. “As we collected food, it was obvious that the Brandon community cared about food insecurity and wanted to help alleviate that in any way they could. Even some who didn’t realize we were coming still searched their homes
for donations, wanting to take part and help combat food insecurity. It was also a fun time for BU student volunteers. We got to drive around Brandon, meet other students and have some fun while doing good work.
Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association collected 1,270.5 pounds in donations, bringing the total amount of collected donations for the Samaritan House to an incredible 4,583.70 pounds.
“It was great to see how generous our community members are, and how passionate they are about food security here in Brandon” said ACC Students’ Association President, Julia Teichroeb. “This year, I think the community hit it out of the park! 4,583 pounds of food! I have no doubt in my mind that this food will make a difference for a lot of families and individuals
in Brandon. We have you, the community, and the Samaritan House to thank for that.”

Both Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association and Brandon University Students’ Union would like to thank all those who donated to this important cause, and those who volunteered and scoured the city tirelessly throughout the day and evening in search of donations.
“We couldn’t have done it without the help of all volunteers that signed up as well as Brandon community members who donated food items, “said BUSU president, Olufunke Sophia Adeleye, “and for that we want to say thank you.”
