Brandon’s ‘Coldest Night of the Year’ fundraising walk on Saturday raised $25,827 dollars, well over their $20,000 goal.
Barb McNish at Samaritan House Ministries says funds will go the food bank to provide hampers for an ever-growing need. She says they’re projecting demand for March will be 3,400 hampers.
“We’re having new people coming in all the time. I think we had 85 new ones in February,” says McNish, “And people are coming in who are working. Maybe they’re working a minimum wage job, (and even) with the wage going up to $15 – you’re going to pay rent, you’re going to buy a bus pass…and if you have children you’re going to buy them a winter coat or boots – and then (you) go to the grocery store, and what used to cost you $50 or $100 now costs you $200.”
McNish says the money raised from this weekend’s walk will only last the next three months because of the ever-increasing demand for food bank hampers.
