The Manitoba government has invested in a new fish hatchery stocking truck that has started delivering trout to Manitoba lakes, Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced today in a media release.
“Manitoba is a world-class destination for outdoor adventure and home to the finest freshwater fishery in the Western Hemisphere, with more than 90 species of fish,” said Nesbitt. “This investment aligns with our government’s ongoing work to protect, conserve, enhance and manage our province’s fisheries, to provide the greatest benefits to all Manitobans.”
The new fish hatchery vehicle is currently stocking waterbodies in the Duck Mountains region.
The stocking of trout in Manitoba has a long history of supplying a diverse experience to anglers and serving as an important economic activity in rural communities, noted Nesbitt, adding that efficient stock delivery requires a specialized, sophisticated distribution vehicle.
The new truck includes advanced aeration and dissolved oxygen monitoring system and features an improved tank configuration that increases the efficiency of fish stocking operations while reducing emissions. It replaces an older model that was beyond its service life expectancy, noted the minister.
“The Manitoba Wildlife Federation is very pleased to see the Manitoba government continuing to invest in Manitoba’s fisheries. The new fish stocking truck is welcome news and will certainly play a vital role in the continuation and expansion of Manitoba’s fish stocking program,” said Carly Deacon, managing director, Manitoba Wildlife Federation.
This spring, as part of the Manitoba government’s ongoing work to maintain and enhance fish populations and habitats, over 130,000 trout that are 18 centimetres or longer have been stocked in 42 waterbodies across Manitoba. In addition, over 35 million walleye fry have been stocked in approximately 60 waterbodies provincewide.
