-The Brandon Wheat Kings begin their WHL regular season at Westoba Place tonight when they welcome the Regina Pats. There will be a tailgate party in the Keystone Centre parking lot beginning at 4:00 pm. Puck drop is at 7:00. The Wheat Kings played the Pats twice during the pre-season beating Regina 1-0 and 2-1 in overtime.
-The Winnipeg Jets signed first-round pick Colby Barlow to a $1.2-million, 3-year, entry-level contract. The Jets selected Barlow 18th overall at the 2023 NHL draft after he had 79 points in 59 games with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack last season. The Jets start the exhibition season this Sunday against the Oilers in Edmonton.
-The Manitoba Junior Hockey League opens its regular season tonight with 5 games including the Virden Oil Capitals at home to the defending champion Steinbach Pistons, the Swan Valley Stampeders visit the Dauphin Kings – and the Waywayseecappo Wolverines host the Neepawa Titans.
-The CFL West Division-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers have the weekend off. They’ll host the East-leading Toronto Argonauts (11-1) next Friday – a third straight sell-out game at IG Field. Tonight in the CFL – the 3-and-10 Ottawa Redblacks host the 6-and-7 Saskatchewan Roughriders – and the 4-and-10 Edmonton Elks meet the BC Lions. BC is 9-and-4, and right behind the 10-and-4 Blue Bombers.
-In the NFL Thursday Night Game – the San Francisco 49’ers improved to 3-and-0 with a 30-12 win over the New York Giants.
-Brandon Bobcats midfielder Brogan Henry has been named MCAC Athlete of the Week. She scored 4 goals in 30 minutes in the Bobcats’ 6-1 win over Providence last week. The BU women’s soccer team, at 2-and-1, visit Providence in Otterburne, Manitoba on Saturday, and will then host the ACC Cougars on Sunday at Healthy Living Centre Field. The men’s team, with one win and two ties, has the same schedule this weekend. Both the Cougars men’s and women’s soccer teams are 0-and-3.
-The Canadian women’s national soccer team, the reigning Olympic champions, open a two-game series against Jamaica tonight for a spot in next summer’s Olympics. The first match takes place in Kingston, Jamaica – the second leg is scheduled for Tuesday in Toronto.
-Kody Fawcett & Dave Michaleski of Selkirk won Golf Manitoba’s Men’s Four-Ball Championship Thursday at the Bridges golf course near Starbuck. Fawcett & Michaleski edged Thomas Friesen & Evan Nachtigall of Wheat City on a countback. Both teams were seven-under par 65. Brad Pardy & Drew Jones and Ross Sheard & Kolby Day of Wheat City were 68; Nolan Tutkaluk & Matt Moore of Shilo were 70; Ryan McKean & Dan O’Greysik of Wheat City were 74 while Jake Cullen & Keaton Jameson of Shilo were 79.
-and the Blue Jays open a three-game series in Tampa Bay today. Toronto currently holds the second of three A-L wild-card spots – and is a half-game up on the Mariners and Rangers with 9 games left in the season.
