-Edmonton has been in party-mode since the Oilers made the playoffs in April – and fans can’t wait for Saturday’s start of the Stanley Cup final when their team faces the Florida Panthers. The last time the Oilers won the Cup in 1990 – the Panthers did not exist yet.
-In a rematch of last year’s Grey Cup game – the Winnipeg Blue Bombers kick-off the regular season this Thursday at home against the Alouettes. In 2023, Montreal beat Winnipeg 28-24 to capture the 110th Grey Cup.
-The Jonas Brothers will perform at the 2024 Grey Cup half-time show in Vancouver this fall. CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie says they’re hoping to appeal to a younger demographic. The Grey Cup game will be held November 17th at B.C. Place Stadium.
-In the South West Baseball League tonight – the Reston Rockets host the Elkhorn Expos. The Expos are 3-and-1 and can move into a first place tie with the Rivers Comets, and the defending South West Baseball League champion Boissevain Centennials, with a win over the Expos. In other action – the Virden Oilers face the Dodgers in Oak River. Both teams are 1-and-3.
-In the Majors – the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 in their series opener on Monday.
-and the Canadian women’s soccer team plays a ‘friendly’ against Mexico tonight in Toronto. Canada, which is looking to defend its Olympic gold medal in Paris this July, has until July 3rd to finalize its 18-player roster and four alternates. Coach Bev Priestman is expected to announce the lineup by the end of June. Canada defeated Mexico 2-0 on Saturday in Montreal.
