-In the Thursday Night CFL game – The 2-and-1 BC Lions entertain the 0-and-3 Edmonton Elks. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who are also looking for their first win of the season, are back in action on Saturday in Calgary against the 1-and-1 Stampeders.
-The Round of 16 is set for this weekend at Euro 2024. There are two games on Saturday – Switzerland meets Italy and Germany faces Denmark.
-The NHL Awards will be handed out tonight in Las Vegas. Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets and Thatcher Demko of the Vancouver Canucks are finalists for the Vezina Trophy for the league’s top goaltender, and fellow Canuck Quinn Hughes is up for the Norris Trophy for top defenceman. Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is a finalist for the Hart Trophy as league MVP. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs is a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, which goes to the most outstanding player as voted on by the players.
-Hockey Canada and USA Hockey have announced the formation of a new series involving each country’s best junior-aged players. The CHL-USA Prospects Challenge, scheduled to start this November, will feature top draft-eligible prospects representing their nations in a two-game series. The new series replaces the CHL versus Russia Series.
-The Canadian Elite Basketball League is expanding its regular season to a 24-game format starting in 2025 which will increase the number of total regular-season games from 100 to 120. The league says to accommodate the extra games, the 2025 season will start about a week earlier in early May and end two weeks later in late August. The expanded schedule will allow two additional home dates per club and increase scheduling flexibility, including more weekend games. The 10-team CEBL, which includes the Winnipeg Sea Bears, is in the midst of its sixth season.
-The Blue Jays – Red Sox game was suspended yesterday due to bad weather – today, the Jays open a 4-game home series against the New York Yankees.
