School zone speed limits kick-in today as the kids return to classes. The reduced 30-k limit is in effect Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm until June. A speeding ticket could cost you at least $200 or more.

Starting next week, 18th Street will have reduced lanes until October as Brandon’s major route gets rebuilt. Repairs, between Rosser and Aberdeen Avenues, will cost almost $10-million dollars – and will involve milling the existing road to remove the deep potholes – and then replacing it with two layers of new pavement.

Assiniboine College expects to see close to 6,000 students this year as classes got underway today – enrolment for domestic students has increased 16%. The college also says thousands more are enrolled in various continuing studies like agriculture extension and English as a Second Language.

Classes also began today at Brandon University which has homecoming events planned from September 12th to the 15th. Activities include the BU125 Birthday Celebration, a faculty concert and the Blue and Gold Social. This Friday, the university will honour six distinguished alumni during the Homecoming Dinner and Awards.

The Bank of Canada has dropped its trend-setting interest rate for a third straight time – it’s now 4.25% down from 4.5. The bank has promised to keep cutting the rate as long as inflation keeps easing.

More than 300,000 Samsung electric oven ranges have been recalled in Canada. Humans and pets can accidentally activate the front-mounted knobs – posing a fire hazard. 57 incidents have been reported – 7 involved injuries.
