A plan by the former Manitoba Conservative government to build nine schools, including a K-8 school in southwest Brandon, through a public private partnership is dead. The NDP government says it’s still committed to building schools, but there was no money was set aside for the Tory plan.

At this week’s Brandon School Board meeting, several parents expressed concerns about how rebuilding 26th Street could impact students at J.R. Reid school. Some options would see traffic lanes reduced and on-street
parking removed to add bike lanes – which has parents worried about safety when dropping off and picking up their kids. A design still needs to be chosen.

The RBC Foundation has made a sizeable donation to Assiniboine College – $700,000 to expand its greenhouse facilities at the Prairie Innovation Centre – and to advance its ‘Greenhouse in a Box’ research project. The transportable greenhouse allows fruit and vegetable production to adapt to almost any location or climate.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation wants the provincial government to ‘rein in’ spending on salaries. In 2023, more than 22,490 government employees made more than $100,00 a year – an 83% increase from 2020. The average Manitoban only makes $63,000 per year.

Last year’s flu season in Manitoba was the worst in two decades – and the health minister wants us to get both the flu shot and the updated COVID vaccine this year. They’re now available at medical clinics, as well as ACCESS centres, pharmacies, nursing stations – and through public health.

A Halloween Haunted House created by Big Brothers and Sisters Westman opens tonight (Oct 17). It’s located at Livingstone Landscaping on Byng Avenue. It features lots of spooky decorations and promises plenty of ‘jump scares’. The organization is also collecting non-perishable food items for Brandon University’s Campus Cupboard food bank. The Haunted House is open tonight (6:00 – 10:00) through Saturday – and again from October 23rd to 26th. Admission is $7 for kids aged 12 and under – and they’ll also receive a free candy bag – and $10 for children aged 13 and older. Each night from 6:00 to 7:00 there will also be a ‘no-scare hour’ for little kids.
