Manitoba Public Insurance is putting more than a million dollars into adult driving programs in rural and remote communities. They’ve partnered with Assiniboine College, University College of the North, and the Citizen’s Bridge agency on the initiative. Nearly 80% of fatal crashes happen in rural areas, and the province wants to reduce that number by offering the necessary training.

A new report this week has found 85% of Manitobans have access to a family doctor – slightly above the national average of 83%, but health experts say this still needs to improve. They say access to a primary care provider is a top priority in the country. Some good news in the report is that surgery wait times are down.

A man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of his common-law partner and their two children – has been sentenced to life with no parole for 16 years. 52-year-old Trevis McLeod committed the murders in Portage la Prairie back in April 2022.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business recently polled Manitoba businesses – and found more than half have been affected by safety issues (62%), and it’s a big increase from last year (42%). The most common problems were theft and shoplifting, followed by vandalism and break-ins.

The Parkview Seniors Housing Co-op in Brandon is getting some much needed upgrades. Canada Mortgage and Housing is providing almost $3.5-million to add new insulation, windows and doors – and new heating and cooling equipment. The 28-unit facility is located on 13th Street.

You can now get a look inside Brandon’s newest attraction. The Brandon Hologram Zoo on Park Avenue is booking small tours before its grand opening. The Africa and dinosaur exhibits will be the first to open. When you enter, you’re given battery-powered glasses in order to see 3-D animals like snakes and crocodiles. They also plan to open restaurant to be called Kongos.

Goldfish crackers – that ‘tamer of toddlers’ and staple of the lunchbox – has grown up. This week, Campbell’s Company was selling the fish-shaped, baked cheddar crackers as ‘Chilean Sea Bass’ crackers to try and lure in older snackers. They say the crackers sold out on their website yesterday, but promised a fresh batch would be available today.
