With the recent increase in pedestrian and cyclist collisions and fatalities across the province, CAA Manitoba is reminding drivers and Halloween trick-or-treaters to be safe tonight. Motorists should slow down and anticipate kids running from driveways, front yards and between parked cars, and trick-or-treaters should stick to sidewalks and marked crossings. CAA also says costumes should include reflective items or accessories.

Operation Red Nose will not be running in Brandon this holiday season, the first time in almost 30 years. For a donation, the service would offer party-goers a safe ride home in their own car. Organizers say reasons for cancelling this year include not enough volunteers – and a lack of interest from users.

We haven’t heard of any incidents in Brandon, but Harvest Manitoba is warning about a scam this week. People have been going door-to-door claiming they’re collecting food and money on behalf of the organization. Harvest says they do not solicit door-to-door. In Brandon, you can drop-off food items directly to Samaritan House or donate cash online.

The mother of a 17-year-old girl, killed in a mass slaying near Carman, is suing Child and Family Services for allegedly failing to protect the girl. Juliette Hastings claims the home that Myah-Lee Gratton was staying in was not properly investigated after the teen expressed concerns for her safety. Ryan Manoakeesick faces 5 counts of first-degree murder.

New provincial court judges may soon be required to take continuing education on intimate partner violence, sexual assault, systemic racism and other topics. A bill is now before the legislature. Classes would also cover experiences of Indigenous and LGBTQ+ people in the justice system.

The two men running for the leadership of the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives made their pitches to party members last night. Obby Khan, a former cabinet minister, said he wants to build a big-tent party that can attract people of different political leanings – while business owner Wally Daudrich said the Tories can be more fiscally and socially conservative.
