Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Sunday morning we turn our clocks back one hour. This means dawn will come earlier in the morning and it’ll get dark sooner in the evening. The time change officially happens at 2:00 am November 3rd.

As we head into the holiday shopping season, it appears Manitoba small and medium-sized businesses are not feeling too confident. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says owners are concerned about lower sales, higher costs and increased theft and vandalism. The federation says one big way we can help is to shop locally to keep our money in the community.

The pandemic surgical backlog has eased somewhat in Manitoba, but we still have the second-highest wait times in Canada. Doctors Manitoba says right now the backlog sits at 40,160 – or about 5 months. The province says it’s working to prioritize those waiting the longest.

Since the federal dental-care plan began six months ago, a million Canadians have received care, and starting today the program will also cover more complex procedures. Paper claims will also be accepted, meaning more dentists will be eligible to work under the program.

We singled out the spiny softshell turtle yesterday as a distinct evolutionary species in Canada – it lives in Ontario and Quebec – but we left out a little local guy – the Manitoba mudpuppy. It’s a brownish-greenish yellowy amphibian with bright red feathery gills coming off of its head. At least one scientist describe the mudpuppy as ‘extremely cute’.
