There was only one game last week for the Brandon Wheat Kings so there was a strong desire to make their lone contest count. Thanks to goaltender Carson Bjarnason and some timely offense, they did exactly that.
Bjarnason stopped all 33 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout win over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers. It was Bjarnason’s first shutout of the season, and for his efforts he was awarded Goaltender of the Week from the Western Hockey League.
An accolade of some sort from the league has been in the cards for Bjarnason for some time. HIs respectable 2.77 GAA puts him in the top-ten in the WHL, but it’s his save percentage that leaps off the page. Sitting at an impressive .924, the Wheat Kings’ veteran netminder is second in the league in that category.
Thanks to both Bjarnason and Ethan Eskit, the Wheat Kings (despite an incredible list of injuries) had a hugely successful five-game homestand. They went 4-0-1 in their games going back to October 16.
The Wheat Kings will have a brief departure from Westoba Place this week before coming right back to home ice. They’ll face the Regina Pats in Regina on Friday, November 8 before returning home to face Prince Albert the next day in the first game of a six-game homestand.
