The Federal Liberals elected Mark Carney to replace Justin Trudeau and lead the party into the next election. He won on the first ballot with almost 86% of the vote. It’s not yet clear when Carney will be sworn-in as prime minister, but when that happens, we can expect a election call soon after.

The federal government has put together a $6.5 billion aid package to support Canadian businesses through the trade war with the U-S. They’re also making temporary changes to the employment insurance program – and one billion dollars will be made available for loans specifically for the agricultural sector.

Arctic Gateway Group, which operates the Port of Churchill, has a deal with a Saskatchewan fertilizer company to import and export phosphate and ammonium sulphate supplies; materials which currently come in through the U.S. Arctic has been working to help expand markets, and last week announced it’ll double shipments of critical minerals through the port.

A new poll suggests very few Canadians are in favour of becoming the 51st U-S State. 9% were in favour of the idea – while 85% were against. Support for becoming an American state is highest in Alberta and among Conservative voters.

The Manitoba government confirmed late last week that remains found during a search of a landfill near Winnipeg were those of 39-year-old Morgan Harris. The search for Harris and Marcedes Myran, victims of serial killer Jeremy Skibicki, began last December. He was convicted last year of first-degree murder.

A popular Brandon eatery is expanding. Komfort Kitchen on Princess Avenue has reportedly purchased the property next door, and plans include building a separate retail storefront accessible from the sidewalk that’ll feature a hard ice cream dipping cabinet, a coffee station with cappuccinos and lattes, and grab-and-go snacks, salads and desserts.

If it’s not too cloudy on Thursday night, we’ll be able to see a total lunar eclipse which will make the moon a coppery, red colour – a blood moon. Eclipses happen when the moon, Earth and the sun align so that Earth’s shadow partially or totally blots out the moon. The lunar eclipse is scheduled to begin just before 11:00 pm in Manitoba.
