Organizers are calling Dauphin’s Countryfest a big success with attendance similar to last year. The four-day event drew over 6,000 people daily to take in the ‘throw-back’ line-up of artists. This year also saw the return of the popular ‘Rockin’ Thursday…and some new features were also a hit like ‘Redneck Twister’ and a ‘Flip Cup’ tournament. The festival is now working on landing major performers for next year to bring the event back to pre-pandemic levels.

To create safer schools, the Brandon School Division is striking advisory committees that’ll begin working in August to develop guidelines. School staff, parents and possibly some students will sit on the committees. Earlier this month, a Neelin High School student was injured in a sword attack. Another teen has been charged with attempted murder.

According to a recent report, there are no further signs of zebra mussels in the Assiniboine River. Last December, the province found some dead mussel larvae at the Brandon Generating Station. The city continues to work alongside the province to monitor for the invasive species that can clog pipes and water systems.

A federal byelection will be held on August 18th in the Alberta riding of Battle River/Crowfoot. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to run in the riding with hopes of regaining a seat in the House of Commons.

Canada has backed down on its digital services tax and trade talks will resume with the U.S. Last Friday, American president Donald Trump had said he was ending all trade negotiations with Canada because of the tax on tech giants like Amazon and Google.

On Tuesday we celebrate Canada’s 158th birthday, and in Brandon the party starts at 11:00 am at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. There’s non-stop entertainment on the main stage, 10 food trucks and over 25 vendors at the market, buskers, lots of kids stuff – and fireworks at dusk.

Apple has its first box-office hit. ‘F1 The Movie’ starring Brad Pitt debuted at the top of the box office making $144 million globally over the weekend. Rounding out the Top 5 were ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, ‘Elio’, ‘M3gan 2.0′ and ’28 Years Later’.
