Citing an investment in affordable housing in the WestMan region, the provincial government announced today they were putting half a million dollars more into the Spruce Woods Housing Co-Op at 30 Braecrest Drive in Brandon.
In a release, Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith announced $500,000 for the housing co-op, which offers affordable housing to low-income families and seniors. The funds will be used to help get much-needed repairs to the 81-unit facility, which has been in operation for almost 40 years.
“Our government has a goal to end chronic homelessness in Manitoba and to do that, we not only need to build more affordable housing but also invest in the units we already have,” said Smith. “These repairs will keep housing affordable for families and seniors in Westman.”
“We are not only a co-op that provides affordable housing, we are a community that helps each other,” said Eva Cameron, manager, Spruce Woods Housing Co-op. “By being able to provide affordable housing, it allows our seniors to live with dignity, it helps our families to be able to afford feeding their children and, in many cases, it has helped families save enough money for the down payment on their very first home.”
In their release, the province also said Spruce Woods Housing Co-op also receives over $14,000 monthly to support operations through the Manitoba government’s Non-Profit Housing Funding Model.
