At a time where tensions between Canada and the United States are, in many ways, higher than ever, a staple of southwestern Manitoba is hoping to stoke the spirit of unit.
The International Peace Gardens, located in Boissevain and running along the border between Manitoba and North Dakota, has announced they will host a Handshake Across the Border as part of their summer floral celebration on August 9. Photographers, including some using drones, will be on hand to capture the moment.
“Imagine hundreds if not thousands of Americans and Canadians shaking hands across the 49th parallel between our terraces and the Peace Chapel,” reads a release on the IPG’s website.
The release goes on to add they will host garden tours, a car show, floral design demonstrations, scavenger hunts and other kids’ activities on the same day as part of the summer floral celebration.
The Peace Gardens were established in 1932 as a symbol of the peaceful, cooperative relationship between Canada and the United States.
