At approximately 12:05 p.m., Brandon Police Service notified Kirkcaldy Heights School administrators of an incident in the area that required police presence. As a precaution, the school was placed in lockdown at the direction of police. Students and staff were directed inside while the external situation in proximity to the school was addressed.
The incident involved a male and female who were traveling in a vehicle when a male pedestrian began shouting profanities at them. The couple stopped their vehicle, leading to a physical altercation between the two males. It was reported that the pedestrian was in possession of an edged weapon, which made contact with the male victim.
The 18-year-old male suspect was apprehended by police and is being held for court in the morning. The victim declined medical assistance as injuries were not substantial and he refused ambulance transport. The weapon was not located on the suspect or recovered at the scene.
The suspect faces charges of Possession of a Weapon, Assault with a Weapon, and Failure to Comply with a Release Order.
Within six minutes time of the original notification, at approximately 12:11 pm, Brandon Police Service advised Brandon School Division that the matter was resolved and that the school could resume regular operations.
The area is deemed safe and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
