The Manitoba government is providing more than $1.3 million to support 23 community revitalization projects in western Manitoba through From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL, an important program that funds critical projects that enhance local communities, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
“Public safety is a top priority of Manitoba’s municipalities and achieving this starts with providing youth with good opportunities in our communities,” said Simard. “We’re proud to support the efforts of Westman communities and municipalities to revitalize and build one Manitoba together. These projects will improve visibility, safety and accessibility, as well as create safe spaces for children, seniors and families to learn and play, paving a path to a bright future.”
The program provides grants of up to $100,000 for community renewal initiatives and community spaces, and up to $50,000 for its children and youth stream. This year, the program will support 23 projects in the Westman region including:
- City of Brandon upgrades to Keystone Lions Humanity Park for new play equipment – $100,000;
- Keystone Centre facility upgrades to the north-end arenas and dressing rooms – 100,000;
- City of Brandon upgrades to the public library and art gallery – $94,755;
- Killarney and Area Foodbank enhance organizational capacity – $58,582;
- Souris and Glenwood Golf Club Inc. course upgrades including irrigation system – $100,000;
- John Howard Society of Brandon Inc. transitional housing programming – $80,000;
- United Way Brandon and District enhanced wellness and peer support programming – $60,425; and
- YMCA of Brandon Inc. day camp enhancements to support inner-city children– $20,000.
“It’s great to see this investment coming to Brandon and our neighbouring communities,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett, City of Brandon. “Whether it’s new play equipment at Keystone Lions Humanity Park or upgrades at the library and art gallery, these projects are going to make our city a better, more welcoming place for everyone. Working together like this helps us build spaces where families, kids and seniors can all enjoy and thrive.”
Launched in 2024, From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL focuses on community-led response and revitalization efforts including capacity building, wellness and safety, economic development, social inclusion, housing co-ordination and youth initiatives.
“We consider the Souris-Glenwood Community Golf Course to be one of the finest nine-hole courses in Manitoba and an important local destination that provides endless recreation opportunities for families, seniors and tourists,” said Glen Tosh, president, Souris-Glenwood Community Golf Course. “This important and timely funding from the Manitoba government will allow us to make the necessary course and irrigation upgrades that will allow this important tourist destination to continue to provide fun and leisure to the community for many years to come.”
In 2025-26, the program has committed more than $12 million to support 208 community development projects across Manitoba.
