The Portage Terriers capped off a perfect post-season in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League by taking home the Turnbull Cup trophy.
Brandonite Carson Perreaux scored the game-winner with 7:02 to play in the third period as the Terriers downed the Steinbach Pistons 4-3 to sweep the best-of-seven championship and finish the playoffs 12-and-0.
"Absolutely not what we expected," said captain and Brandon product Tanner Jago. "We knew it was going to be a grind come playoff time, but when the going got tough, the tough got going, so hats off to the fellas."
Twin brothers Brad and Shawn Bowles of Elkhorn also scored as Portage captured the MJHL championship for the fifth time in eight seasons and their first since 2012.
The next task for the Terriers is the Western Canada Cup in Fort McMurray, Alberta starting on April 25th
"Fort McMurray will obviously be a challenge; it’s every league’s champion," added Jago. "I think we can hang with those western teams and we’re going to look to go and play hard."
Regardless how the results go, Portage will be hosting the RBC Cup with the National Junior ‘A’ Hockey Championship running from May 9th to 17th.
