
An Ice plant leak shut down Brandon’s Curling Club; cut the club’s season short at the Keystone Centre this week. This refrigeration failure forced a last-minute venue change, but the curling community stepped up over the weekend. 16-men’s teams and 6-women’s teams were set to compete in Brandon starting today. Within 24 hours of this shutdown, The Masters men’s championship was moved to the Carberry Curling Club, with Brandon’s ice-making crew preparing the surface. And The women’s event will move to the Riverview Curling Club. The Brandon Curling Club is now reviewing options for member’s refunds.

The town of Virden is suing the Province, and a consulting firm over a new aquifer, which ran out of drinking water; 4-years later. The Brandon Sun says the town claims it was forced to switch back to its former water system; after a third-party engineer it hired, found the new aquifer; did not have the proper water supply capacity; and should not have been recommended or developed as the town’s water source. The Province will not comment because the matter is before the courts. The Virden drinking water advisory, that was issued in December of 2025; remains in effect.

A man who allegedly threatened to kill a police officer; and his family multiple times; was charged with uttering threats; and will appear in court in April. Police say a 31-year old man wearing a balaclava; threated staff at a business on the 1000 block of 18th Street Saturday night. He’s was released on an undertaking.

Canada needs to take action on men’s health. The Federal Health Minister launched the first step toward a National strategy Monday. They are seeking feedback starting March 2. Data released by Movember Canada last summer; shows that men are three times more likely than women to die by suicide, and are less likely to ask doctors for help with a range of symptoms.

Many local producers come together to share in this promotion of quality food protein and support many charities in Manitoba. Held at the Dome Building, the luncheon features a showcase meal of pork entrees paired with the excitement of the pork quality competition. Beyond celebrating pork excellence, the luncheon has a strong charitable focus: Grand Champion & Reserve Grand Champion entries go to the Assiniboine College Culinary Arts program for use in teaching food preparation. Through East 40 Packers all other entries are donated to food banks and community charities. Sponsorship money contributes to a prize pool, each entrant must pick their charity at time of entry, and the charity receives a minimum of 50% of the prize money if that entrant places 5th or higher in the competition.

Manitoba’s P-C leader is headed to Brandon for a fundraising ‘Breakfast with Obby Khan’ and his vision for the future. Khan, will also be at the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba’s President’s Dinner Thursday evening and will host his breakfast Friday morning. The Breakfast will be held at The Eagles Nest Bar & Grill at the Wheat City Golf Course, doors open at 7:30am.
