With inflation leaping up again in March, every province took some degree of a shock to the system. According to Statistics Canada, Manitoba took it harder than almost any other province in the country.
Manitoba’s inflation rose to 3.0 percent, up from 2.0 percent in February. This tied Manitoba with Nova Scotia for the highest inflation levels by province in Canada, with Ontario coming it at 1.9 percent.
The report on the monthly numbers said inflation nationwide rose to 2.4 percent in March, a sharp jump from 1.8 percent in February. StatsCan said this was largely driven by rising fuel costs that stemmed from the war in Iran. According to their report, March saw a 21.2 percent increase in the price of gasoline, the largest on record.
Today marks the beginning of Ottawa’s excise fuel tax holiday, which lasts until Labour Day and is expected to reduce the price of gas by as much as ten cents per litre.
