Manitoba is restructuring the Manitoba Water Services Board, shifting it under the Department of Municipal and Northern Relations in an effort to streamline how water and wastewater projects are planned, approved, and delivered. The province says the move is intended to reduce administrative overlap and give municipalities a clearer, more efficient path when seeking support for essential infrastructure upgrades.
For Westman communities, the change could have a noticeable impact. Municipalities across the region — including Brandon — have long identified water treatment, distribution systems, and wastewater capacity as priority areas tied to growth, development, and long‑term planning. By placing the Water Services Board directly within the department responsible for municipal relations, the province aims to speed up decision‑making and improve coordination with local councils and utility managers.
The realignment also positions the province to respond more quickly to infrastructure pressures in rural and regional communities, where aging systems and rising demand often collide. Officials say the shift will help ensure that projects in Westman move through the approval process with greater clarity and predictability.
The province expects the new structure to strengthen partnerships with municipalities and support more efficient delivery of water services across the region.
