Statistics Canada has launched its next phase of the 2026 Census, sending enumerators door‑to‑door to households that have not yet completed their census forms. The in‑person follow‑up campaign began in early June and is part of the agency’s standard procedure to ensure every Canadian household is counted.
The door‑knocking effort focuses on homes that did not respond to earlier reminders by mail or online. Enumerators are authorized to visit residences, provide information about the census, and offer help completing the questionnaire on the spot. Statistics Canada says these visits are essential for maintaining the accuracy of national population data, which guides decisions on health care, infrastructure, education, and community planning.
All census workers carry official government photo identification, and residents can verify their identity by calling the Census Help Line at 1‑833‑852‑2026. The agency emphasizes that participation in the census is mandatory under the Statistics Act. Individuals who refuse to provide information or obstruct an enumerator may face fines of up to $500, while more serious violations can result in penalties of up to $1,000.
While most follow‑ups for the Census of Agriculture are handled by phone or email, some producers may also receive in‑person visits depending on response rates in their region. Statistics Canada encourages anyone who has not yet completed their census to do so online, by mail, or with the assistance of an enumerator during a visit.
