A state of emergency has been declared in the Municipality of Minitonas‑Bowsman after an extreme rainfall event dumped nearly six inches of water on the community in less than 24 hours, overwhelming drainage systems and triggering widespread flooding. The deluge — one of the heaviest single‑day totals recorded in Manitoba this year — left homes flooded, roads impassable and large sections of the community without power.
According to early Monday morning totals, Minitonas received 125.4 mm of rain on Sunday, with an additional 22.5 mm falling overnight, bringing the total to 147.9 mm (5.8 inches). Surrounding communities, including San Clara, Swan Valley and Birch River, also reported significant rainfall, though none reached the extreme levels seen in Minitonas.
The municipality issued a shelter‑in‑place request late Sunday as water levels surged, basements began to flood and power outages spread across the region. Manitoba Hydro crews are working to restore service, but access remains difficult due to washed‑out roads.
One of the most significant closures is PTH 10 between PR 366 and Renwer, where water damage has made the highway unsafe for travel. Residents are being urged to stay off the roads, follow local emergency instructions and call 911 for any medical emergencies.
Officials warn that additional rainfall could worsen conditions, and assessments of road damage and infrastructure impacts are ongoing. More updates are expected throughout the day as crews continue response efforts.
