Assiniboine College is introducing a free workplace English course for newcomers with support from a $129,000 investment from the Manitoba government.
The English for Occupational Skills & Employment Success (EOSES) program is designed to help eligible newcomers develop the language, digital literacy and workplace communication skills needed to find and succeed in employment across Manitoba.
Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino said the province’s investment will help newcomers gain the skills and confidence needed to contribute to Manitoba’s workforce.
The part-time course is offered at no cost to participants and is structured to fit around other work and family commitments. Students will spend about eight hours per week in the 12-week program.
Classes will be available both online and in person in Brandon. The first two cohorts begin in September, followed by two additional intakes in January. A total of 80 spaces will be available, with 20 students in each cohort.
In addition to improving English-language proficiency, the program will focus on digital skills, workplace communication and understanding Canadian workplace culture and expectations.
Karen O’Gilvie, director of the Centre for Adult Learning at Assiniboine College, said many newcomers arrive with strong educational and professional backgrounds but can face challenges adjusting to the Canadian workplace.
The college expects strong demand for the program, particularly in western Manitoba, where newcomers are looking to increase their skills, pursue new employment opportunities or advance in their current careers.
The course is open to individuals 18 years of age and older with a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark level of 5. Eligible participants include temporary residents with valid work or study permits, as well as Canadian citizens who identify as newcomers. Permanent residents may also express interest, although priority will be given to temporary residents and newcomers.
