Manitoba Records Third Motorcycle Fatality of 2026 Near Lac du Bonnet
A 58-year-old Whitemouth man has become Manitoba’s third motorcycle fatality of 2026 after RCMP say he was found in a ditch along Highway 11 near Lac du Bonnet. According to investigators, the rider had failed to return home, prompting concern before he was located. Police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The death comes as Manitoba enters the busiest part of the motorcycle riding season, a period when safety officials regularly remind both riders and motorists to remain vigilant on rural and urban roads alike.
While every fatality is significant, the province’s motorcycle death toll remains below last year’s pace. At this point in 2025, nine motorcyclists had already lost their lives, compared with three so far this year.
The latest crash also highlights a long-standing trend on Manitoba roads. Manitoba Public Insurance has reported that fatal motorcycle collisions are more likely to occur on rural roadways than in urban centres. In one recent review, 71 per cent of fatal motorcycle crashes occurred on rural roads, compared with a five-year average of 58 per cent.
MPI data also found that 40 per cent of fatal motorcycle crashes were single-vehicle collisions, while 60 per cent involved another vehicle. Safety experts say factors such as speed, visibility, road conditions and rider behavior can all play a role in serious crashes.
As RCMP continue their investigation into the Lac du Bonnet-area collision, the fatality serves as another sobering reminder of the risks motorcyclists face on Manitoba highways, particularly during the peak summer riding months.
